Alpha Thalassemia X-Linked Intellectual Disability Syndrome, also known as ATR-X, is a genetic syndrome mainly affecting males. It causes both intellectual delays and developmental disabilities, as well as many other symptoms. It is known by its distinctive features, such as widely spaced eyes, a small upturned nose, low set ears, microcephaly (small head size), and skeletal abnormalities. Most of those affected also suffer from hypotonia, delayed speech, digestive issues, genital abnormalities, and vision issues.
The International ATR-X Foundation was created in late 2018. We officially became 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation in June of 2019.
Mission Statement:
In fulfilling our mission, we will provide ATR-X families with resources and support, both locally and globally, educate and spread public awareness, and help arrange local and international retreats.
Vision Statement:
Our vision is to create a global community for our ATR-X families in a world where ATR-X is known! We will address issues and challenges facing our community and aid in research opportunities.
